The November/December 2011 issue of the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer Magazine has an informative article on Melvin and Elaine Hooker's Long Lake lakeside forest which has 2800 feet of lakeshore and contains red pine, white spruce, white pine, plus a mix of jackpine and aspen in the 167 acres they manage with the help of a DNR private forest management specialist. The forest provides a home for ruffed grouse, wild turkeys, and deer. Over the years the family has also seen skunks, foxes, martens, fishers, bobcats, bears and wolves.
