Get the Lead Out program

As part of the DNR’s Get the Lead Out program, we had 1.4 pounds lead tackle turned in. The lead was taken to the Hubbard County household hazardous waste site at the south transfer station. Please check your tackle boxes for all your lead sinkers and lures, then take them to the transfer station. All three of the local bait shops sell lead free tackle. Just ask the clerks for the correct aisle.

For more details check this website.

Thank you to all members who were able to join us on our Zoom Annual Meeting last Saturday. The Board practiced and practiced to make the presentation go as smoothly as possible. We realize that not everyone had a good internet connection or the time at 10am on a weekend morning to watch it live. In this post is a link to the full agenda, an image of our election outcomes, and an image the of Ice Out contest results. The videos of both speakers were posted on June 30, 2020. See that post immediately below this one for those links.

We hope many of you will be participating in our Flotilla on Saturday, July 4th, at 10am!

It has been a fun filled weekend on Long Lake with our annual meeting on Saturday, June 29th and our 4th of July Flotilla. We know there were many picnics held around the lake as well as many fireworks displays. Here are some of the pictures of the events.

Congratulations to our new LLAA board members: Ken Retzer, Robert Nelson, Jim Seifert, and Dawn Hammerschmidt. A very big thank you to Monika Wilkins for her service as President of LLAA and to Betty Larsen for her service as secretary. Thank you to Jack Derr and Ron Taggart for your service on the board also. (The Board Members page on this website will be updated soon.)

We had 90 people come to the Long Lake Area Association meeting on June 30th. Barb Roberts organized the registration very well and everyone was registered with ease. There were 47 families registered at the meeting this year.

Click here for a list of all our door prize winners.

The Association made available AIS related items such as coasters, sponges to “Clean, Drain & Dry” boats, and PVC tubes to place at docks for sampling zebra mussels to families in attendance. Also there were free trees to prevent soil erosion – potted pines from the White family.

Thank you to Betty Larsen for the great refreshments and the festive decor, too! Thanks to Monika Wilkens for the great story ending with the aurora borealis over the lake to lead off the meeting. And last, but certainly not least, thank you to Jason Durham, our speaker from Go Fish! Guide Service, for entertaining us with his stories and sharing his fishing expertise.

Featured Speaker Darrin Hoverson

Darrin Hoverson was this year’s featured speaker and what he had to say was very interesting.

The LLAA Annual Meeting was well attended on June 25th. We started out hearing from Darrin Hoverson, MN DNR Area Hydrologist. He explained how the DNR has switched to a new system of dividing responsibilities. The officers are now assigned according to watersheds instead of political boundaries such as counties. We are in the Long Lake Minor Watershed and this watershed has been designated a Priority Watershed according to the latest WRAPS (Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy) report.

Darrin listed several pressures bearing on Long Lake:

  • Loss of Forest Cover
  • Run off from fertilizers
  • Loss of shoreline habitat..(natural buffers)
  • Irrigation wells
Darrin Hoverson presentation at 2016 Annual Meeting

According to the Hubbard County Local Water Plan our priority concerns are: AIS and the changes in both water quantity and quality for surface and ground water.

Sharon Natzel Appreciation

Sharon Natzel was formally recognized at the Annual Meeting this year in appreciation for her years of service to Long Lake Area Association. She served four years as LLAA’s President and has volunteered many hours of service in a variety of ways toward the good of our lake.

Sharon’s award for her commitment, dedication, and service is in the form of a crystal water drop with an etching of Long Lake.

The award reads: “IN HONOR OF YOUR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS AS LONG LAKE AREA ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, YOUR COMMITMENT, DEDICATION, AND SERVICE TO ENSURE A HEALTHY LONG LAKE. 2016”

Sharon’s term limits allow her to continue to serve LLAA as Treasurer and as an Alternate for Neighborhood #3. She is excited to work with Monika Wilkins, our new President for LLAA and the LLAA Foundation.

Al Kiecker Demonstration

After Darrin Hoverson’s report the association continued with the annual business meeting. The complete minutes of the annual meeting will be posted on the Board Communications page when the draft is approved at the board meeting in August.

During the meeting Al Kiecker presented a demonstration of the equipment the water team uses to monitor water quality. The team checks on a regular basis over the summer months.

Other reports were given on water quality, AIS inspections, etc. Then nominations were held for the election of representatives from the neighborhoods.

2016 Annual Meeting Prize Winners

Over 93 people attended the Long Lake Area Association annual meeting on Saturday morning. First the group heard an excellent talk from Christine Herwig, the Regional Non Game Specialist, from Minnesota’s DNR. Christine shared information on eagles, herons, loons, trumpeter swans, ospreys and other wildlife such as otters in the area. She said most of these species are doing OK in Minnesota but each has a few concerns that we need to be aware of in order to keep the species healthy. She also shared information on how we can all help keep our lake clear and healthy by being careful with our shoreline, by planting native plants, and watching out for invasive plants such as the Japanese Knotweed or Non Native Water Lily. (Check out our Shore Management page for more information.) She also talked a little about pine beetles, turtles, amphibians and AIS. Christine mentioned several books and pamphlets that would be good sources of information: Resource Link to DNR.

The next part of the meeting conducted by our president, Sharon Natzel, covered all the details of the association such as approval of last year’s minutes, and treasurer’s report from Doug Bakken for both the association and the LLAA Foundation. There were reports from various board members:

  • Jeff Bjorkman on AIS monitoring
  • Jaimie Beretta on Events and the Kids Fishing Contest
  • Dave Anderson on the LLAA Foundation which is now 5 years old
  • Sharon Natzel on pine bark beetles, lake monitoring, groundwater planning and Sandpiper pipeline updates

Elections were held for Neighborhoods 2, 4, and 6. Two new people were welcomed to the board: Monica Wilkins from Neighborhood 6 and Pam Petersen from Neighborhood 4

Dave Anderson, Arthur Howe and Renee Gust were thanked for their service on the board.

And of course at the end Door Prizes were drawn with the grand prize basket going to Dave Peterson of Neighborhood 5.

The Association had a good turnout for this year’s meeting. Barb Roberts counted 67 people attending, although people came and went according to their schedules. Neighborhood representatives collected $1350 in dues, including two new members and two returning members.

There were also three checks written to the LLAA Foundation to help in the fight against AIS. During Jeff Borkman’s talk he reminded us that Long Lake has a unique position in this fight. We are one of the few lakes without a river running into it and we have a dam to keep things from coming up the Long Lake River. If we are vigilant about keeping boats and equipment clean, we can keep AIS out of our Lake. Click here to view door prize winners
